The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) has developed a free mobile app to help users navigate the Adirondack Rail Trail and connect with communities, businesses, services, events, and attractions along the route. The app is available through the App Store and Google Play. Users can access RailTrail.APP, a direct link that will automatically redirect to the appropriate App Store based on the user's device.ROOST envisioned and designed the app with two primary goals in mind: to provide practical navigation support for rail trail users, and to encourage economic activity in nearby communities. By helping users identify nearby towns, villages, restaurants, shops, attractions, and services, the app makes it easier for people to extend their rail trail outing into the surrounding communities.Users will be able to view their real-time position on the Adirondack Rail Trail, access trail information, and identify nearby communities and points of interest. The Adirondack Rail Trail is a 34-mile route through some of the most beautiful and remote areas between Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake, NY. While the trail’s remote setting is central to the experience, having access to information, navigation, and nearby services helps users more fully enjoy the trail and connect with the communities along the route.According to Adam DeSantis, director of economic development at ROOST, one of the app’s most important features is its offline capability. “Users can access key trail information and navigation tools even when they are outside of cellular or Wi-Fi service,” he said. “They can also search for nearby businesses and services and use the app to help navigate to those locations.”ROOST partnered with UpNCoding to build the app. UpNCoding is a local software engineering bootcamp that trains the next generation of software developers while partnering with local businesses to give students practical, project-based experience guided by seasoned instructors. The 2026 Great Adirondack Garage Sale is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 22-24, within the Adirondack region of upstate New York. The event takes place throughout communities along a 200-mile trail, on NYS routes 28, 30, and 3.The region-wide garage sale is a popular kick-off to the summer season, with residents and visitors embracing the opportunity to buy and sell unique household items, gently used furnishings, home accessories, and quirky treasures. According to Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Regional Manager KC Morrison, the sale offers an opportunity for local residents, second homeowners, and visitors to meet their neighbors and enjoy communities along the route. “The Great Adirondack Garage Sale attracts people from throughout the region and beyond, with many planning their annual visit to the Adirondack region each year to coincide with the event,” he said. “It offers a great opportunity for visitors to experience many of the Adirondack region’s charming communities as they travel from one area to another, searching for treasures.” The sale route meanders through the communities of Old Forge, Inlet, Raquette Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake, Tupper Lake, Cranberry Lake, Piercefield, Wanakena, Newcomb, and Speculator, with additional stops at small hamlets and rural locations in between. The garage sale route can be easily followed by using one of the printed maps available within each community. NYS Association of Chiefs of Police Training ConferenceMay 18-21, 2026 More than 225 law enforcement partners from across the state will arrive in Lake Placid for its annual conference. Attendees will participate in training sessions, hear from various presenters, speak with vendors and take part in networking opportunities throughout the four-day conference. Communities throughout the Adirondack region are preparing to welcome local farmers markets this summer and fall. Many markets will begin in late May and continue through mid-October.With more than 20 farmers markets throughout the Adirondacks, the region offers a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, bread, honey, dairy products, maple syrup, baked goods, handmade crafts, and other locally produced functional items and works of art. The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism is inviting local, ​​Adirondack-based businesses to join its online marketplace, currently in development. Retailers and artisans located in Essex County, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and Hamilton County are encouraged to take part.The marketplace is being designed and developed by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism to connect shoppers with products from retailers throughout the region, expanding sellers’ reach outside the area, while supporting local commerce. It will support a wide range of vendors, including retail, local artisans, and specialty goods.The Adirondacks, USA Market will feature products from multiple Adirondack-based vendors, allowing online shoppers to browse and purchase items available from a variety of Adirondack retailers while accommodating seamless integration with some of the most common point-of-sale and online sale platforms used by local businesses. Businesses already using softwares including Shopify and Square will be able to integrate directly into the market and receive orders using their existing fulfillment processes. The market will also provide an accessible option for businesses without current e-commerce capabilities or systems. The project’s goal is to expand year-round economic opportunities for local businesses, driving increased revenue without adding operational complexity or overhead. The eighth annual Lake Placid Community Day celebration will take place on Sunday, May 31, from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Olympic Jumping Complex, which serves as an alternate location this year, due to construction at the Horse Show Grounds. The event is free and open to anyone who lives, works, or volunteers in Lake Placid, and will feature complimentary food and beverages along with pirate-themed, family-friendly activities, including caricatures by Joe Ferris, virtual reality headsets, face painting, a clown, a photo booth, and games.The celebration will feature live music from Triple Axel, with more than 40 nonprofit organizations on-site sharing information about their work in the community. Celebrate Paddling ADK, the Adirondacks’ annual festival honoring the region’s vibrant paddling culture, will return in May 2026 for its 10th anniversary. Beginning in early May and extending throughout the summer, the festival invites locals and visitors alike to experience more than two months of on-the-water adventures, educational clinics, community service opportunities, and outdoor exploration throughout Saranac Lake. The Whiteface Region of upstate New York is set to welcome athletes and outdoor enthusiasts this June with a lineup of race events. The Wilmington Whiteface Uphill Bike and Foot Races and the Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run and Festival have been scheduled.“These races are a fantastic way to highlight everything Wilmington has to offer,” said Christina Ortiz, director of the Whiteface Visitors Bureau. “It’s a chance to experience the community’s warm hospitality, explore our expanding trail networks, and take in the stunning Adirondack scenery. This is one of the most dynamic times of year to be here.”The race season kicks off Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. with the Wilmington Whiteface Uphill Bike and Foot Races, followed by the Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run and Festival, which caps off the month on Saturday, June 20.Starting in the heart of Wilmington and finishing at the summit of Whiteface Mountain, the Adirondacks’ fifth-highest peak, the uphill bike and foot races span eight miles, mostly along the scenic Veterans Memorial Highway. The steady 8% grade and total elevation gain of 3,500 feet make this a challenging climb, culminating in panoramic views of the Adirondacks, New England, and Canada.Cyclists start at the Whiteface Region Visitors Bureau, 5753 NYS Route 86, in Wilmington, while runners begin just up the road at the junction of routes 86 and 431. The website has been designed to enhance how those who may be unfamiliar with the Adirondacks access travel-related information about the area, while also aligning with trends and changes in the way people travel. AdirondacksUSA.com encourages users to “find their place” within the Adirondacks’ six million acres by using the website to learn about the Adirondacks, its geography, activities, and events throughout the region. It then directs users to one or more of the ROOST-managed regional websites. Taking place at the Legislative Office Building in Albany each spring, Adirondack Day shares information about the region’s economic diversity with New York state officials and lawmakers.The event is organized by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), the North Country Chamber of Commerce, and the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages. It includes Adirondack-themed displays and exhibits, local food and beverages, and opportunities for attendees to meet and interact with exhibitors. The theme of this year’s event is “Love Your Adirondacks: Rooted in ___” with the blank space representing different aspects of the Adirondack Park’s key industries and activities, including: community, adventure, history, agriculture, sport, conservation, education, culture, and more. Known as Adirondack Regional Database (ADK Data), the system aligns with advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and search engine improvements to ensure that Adirondack information is optimized for the way people use the internet to plan their travel.ADK Data has been designed, developed, and implemented by ROOST’s web development and design team in anticipation of a shift in trip planning behavior, specifically evolving internet search options and generative AI. ADK Data takes into account the need to centralize regional information into a format that aligns with the manner in which AI and search engines scan for and present information to the end user.According to Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals, an international organization representing finance and technology segments of the hospitality industry, 40% to 50% of travelers are using AI for trip planning. In the United States, more than half (56%) of travelers used AI for at least one trip in the past year, marking a massive shift in behavior. Common uses include generating itineraries (75%), research (71%), and booking, with 78% of users making purchases based on AI recommendations.According to ROOST COO Mary Jane Lawrence, this indicates something important about how decisions are being made today. “People are increasingly comfortable using AI to learn about a destination and assist with trip planning,” she said. “Travelers are not only using AI to conduct research, but they are also acting on its guidance. Maple producers across the Adirondacks will open their sugarhouses to visitors this March as part of New York State’s Maple Weekends, a statewide celebration of maple sugaring season; one of the state’s most important agricultural traditions.Adirondack Maple Weekends for 2026 are scheduled for March 21–22 and March 28–29, featuring open houses at local sugarhouses, pancake breakfasts, and syrup tastings. Events are typically held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., though visitors should check individual locations for specific times. New York is the second-largest maple producer in the United States, producing more than 800,000 gallons of maple syrup annually and supporting more than 2,000 maple producers statewide. The state also has the largest number of tappable maple trees in the country, making maple production a significant contributor to New York’s agricultural economy. The Adirondack region plays an important role in that production, with family-run operations, research forests, and educational institutions producing maple syrup and maple products each year.Maple production depends on specific weather conditions common in late winter and early spring. When daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing, pressure changes inside sugar maple trees cause sap to flow. Producers collect the sap and boil it down into maple syrup, a process that typically requires about 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup.Several Adirondack maple producers and organizations are participating in Maple Weekends and offering opportunities for visitors to learn about the sugaring process:Cornell University Uihlein Maple Research Forest — Lake PlacidThe Cornell University Uihlein Maple Research Forest conducts research on forest management, maple production, and climate impacts on sugar maple ecosystems. The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism has compiled and released the results of its fourth annual tourism impact survey, conducted in late 2025. The survey gathered feedback from residents and business owners in Essex and Hamilton counties, as well as the villages of Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, regarding their perceptions of tourism's impact on the local economy and community.The survey was designed to capture business owners’ and residents’ perceptions and opinions on various topics related to tourism in the region. It aims to uncover sentiments regarding tourism-related activities and their impacts which contribute to the local economy and social environment, as well as identify topics that may be sources of concern. Surveys completed by business owners represent 26.6% of total surveys, compared with 73.4% completed by non-business owners. The vast majority of respondents have lived in the region for more than 11 years and 86% are employed full-time or retired.According to ROOST Chief Operating Officer Mary Jane Lawrence, destination management and marketing organizations (DMMOs) like ROOST work to balance economics of the tourism industry and community needs. “To be effective as a DMMO, it’s essential that local sentiment is clearly understood,” Lawrence said. “This survey gives residents and business owners a voice, helping us identify opportunities, address challenges, and shape strategies that support the local economy and quality of life for community members.”Key findings include:The vast majority of respondents (83%) believe that tourism positively impacts their community.More than 95% of respondents believe that tourism has a positive impact on businesses in their local community.The vast majority of respondents indicated that tourism has a positive impact on the region’s economy, the availability of local attractions, retail opportunities, and restaurant options.May and June saw the highest proportion of business owners indicating they could benefit from increased business (64% and 62%, respectively), suggesting opportunity for growth in the late spring/early summer period.The share of respondents who reported working more than one job (39%) increased by 10 percentage points year over year.Each year since 2023, survey respondents believe that the region would benefit most from additional marketing of arts, biking/cycling, and food/restaurants.Traffic and affordable housing remain the top cited negative impacts of tourism. Environmental degradation was cited more often than in past years as a negative consequence.Since 2022, a growing share of residents agree that increasing the number of permanent residents in their community is important to them.Results underscore the importance of recent community initiatives to balance community benefits with the positive impacts of the local tourism economy. These initiatives include the Community Tourism Enhancement Fund, which provides funding to each of the 18 towns in Essex County, to enhance the community for residents and visitors. Additionally, ROOST has collaborated with local officials to establish an event committee to review large-scale events and implement recommendations to mitigate impacts. ROOST also works with the region’s elected representatives to assist with initiatives such as workforce housing, grant applications for community improvement, and other projects designed to benefit Essex County communities. “The resident sentiment survey is an important tool for ROOST - it allows us to monitor and understand the impacts of tourism on local residents year over year,” stated ROOST President and CEO Dan Kelleher. “We appreciate that the vast majority of respondents affirm the overall benefits of tourism in our region, and we also recognize the important and ongoing work to assist our communities with housing, large-event mitigation, and other destination management initiatives.”Business owners and residents were invited to complete the survey via email, social media, news reports, and local notices. A total of 737 surveys from residents and business owners were completed in target regions. Without state and local tax revenue generated by travel and tourism, each Essex County household would pay an additional $6,305 per year in taxes; each Hamilton County household would pay an additional $6,213 per year.Exceptional ROI: ROOST 2024 Annual Leisure Travel Study revealed an 84:1 return on investment. This result means that for every dollar ROOST spent on marketing, $84 in tourism revenue was generated by visitors within local communities.ROOST’s marketing activities highlight the Adirondacks as a prominent vacation destination, ultimately driving year-round visitation throughout the area. Adirondack Winter Pride weekend is taking place February 27–March 1, 2026, with activities planned throughout Lake Placid and Wilmington for LGBTQ+ residents, visitors, and their allies. Organizers are encouraging businesses, restaurants, hotels, civic groups, individuals, and others throughout the Tri-Lakes region and beyond, to consider participation through sponsorships, events, and special promotions. Adirondack Winter Pride celebrates the LGBTQ+ community with a weekend that features a range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages throughout Lake Placid and at the region’s historic Olympic venues. Activities include a welcome reception, skiing at Whiteface Mountain along with an après-ski party, access to Olympic venues, cross-country skiing, and more. According to Eileen Mowrey, Lake Placid and Whiteface Region manager for the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, the event is expected to draw new and returning visitors to the area. “We’re excited to welcome attendees back to the Lake Placid region and hope visitors will take time to explore our local businesses and attractions before and after programmed events,” said Mowrey. “We encourage business owners and managers to think creatively about ways to get involved—whether that’s hosting an evening event or welcome party, offering a special package, or adding a signature cocktail or appetizer to the menu. The community of Saranac Lake will be hosting its North Country New Year’s Eve celebration on December 31 beginning at 5:00 p.m. Residents and visitors from across the North Country and the Adirondacks are encouraged to take part in the festivities. The event offers a family-oriented celebration focused on arts, culture, and community. Local, regional, and guest artists will provide various entertainment and music across multiple downtown locations, showcasing a blend of talent and creativity to celebrate the new year in style. North Country New Year admission is $20 per person, $15 for seniors, and free for children under 18. Access to venues during North Country New Year is available by purchasing a specially designed sticker which serves as the event pass. The stickers can be purchased in person at Sparkle Village on December 6 and 7; or purchased from December 8-30 at NorthCountryNewYear.com and picked up at the Harrietstown Town Hall with proof of purchase. Admission stickers can also be purchased in-person throughout the day at the Harrietstown Town Hall on December 31; admission is also available for purchase at the Saranac Lake Civic Center and Petrova Elementary School on December 31, beginning at 5:00 p.m. (cash only). Throughout the evening, venues throughout downtown Saranac Lake will feature live entertainment, family-friendly activities, music, dance lessons, local food, comedy shows, and rides on the Adirondack Carousel. Grammy-nominated band Professor Louie and the Crowmatix, from Woodstock, NY will be headlining North Country New Year at the Harrietstown Town Hall auditorium beginning at 8:00 p.m. with their mix of rock, Americana, and blues. At Petrova Elementary School, families can enjoy kids’ activities including balloon animals, Circus with Sammy, caricatures by Joe Ferris, face painting, live performances by Jeff Boyer’s Big Bubble Bonanza, and a special visit from the Adirondack Sky Center planetarium. Historic Saranac Lake will host a vintage game night at the Saranac Lake Laboratory Museum. Participants are also invited to lace up for ice skating at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. According to Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Saranac Lake Marketing Manager Ashley Garwood, organizers are excited about this year’s activities and entertainment lineup. “Our event committee has been working all year to plan and secure entertainment, plan activities and encourage local businesses and organizations to take part in North Country New Year,” she said. “New Year’s Eve is always a magical time, especially with our beautiful, snowy village and its warm, welcoming venues. We’re thrilled to be able to create another memorable experience for residents, families, and visitors to welcome the New Year.” The evening features a number of other activities taking place throughout downtown including: Caricatures and face painting Comedy by longtime favorites Moody McCarthy and Completely Stranded Magician Alakazam performs at 6:00 p.m. Local music from The Allens ‘50s/’60s revivalists Frankie & the Moonlighters Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir Fire dancing by Smoke Show Fire Co. At 10:00 p.m. attendees will be treated to a fireworks display, welcoming 2026. The mission of North Country New Year (NCNY) is to create a family-friendly New Year's Eve experience for the communities of Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Tupper Lake, as well as the surrounding region.
