The excitement kicks off on Friday, August 9, when players can participate in an optional skins game with a $20 entry fee, providing golfers the chance to familiarize themselves with the course. The day continues with the long drive and putting contests, sponsored by TaylorMade, where golfers can showcase their power and precision.
On Saturday, August 10, the tournament officially begins with the first round of play. As golfers navigate the challenging course, spectators can enjoy the lively atmosphere and scenic views. A highlight of the evening will be the $25 buffet and $30 prime rib dinner, offering a delicious way to cap off the day.
The tournament concludes on Sunday, August 11, with the final round of play. The tournament culminates with an awards ceremony following each flight.
Director of Golf and Course Supervisor, Evan La Barge, expresses his excitement for this year's milestone event. “The Tupper Lake Pro-Am Golf Tournament is an exciting summer event that brings together the best of our community and the sport of golf,” he said. “I commend the hard work by our grounds crew, golf shop staff, and all of the volunteers who help make this tournament a success year after year.”
Many renowned professional golfers, including Scott Berliner and James Chung, have registered for this year's event. Berliner is returning to defend his title after winning last year's tournament with a two-day total of 3-under-par 139; he is coming to Tupper Lake fresh off his 11th win at the Donald Ross Classic. Chung has been competing as a professional in the Tupper Lake Pro-Am since 2009; he recently qualified and competed in the Senior Open Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania. The Tupper Lake Golf Club was built in 1932 by renowned course architect Donald J. Ross. The 18-hole, par 71 course is considered by many to be one of the most challenging courses in the Adirondacks. The front nine runs across a mountainside, offering challenging sidehill lies. The back nine plays downhill and then back up the mountain, demanding precision as players aim for its well-protected greens.

One Square Mile of Hope Aims to Break Guinness World Record
One Square Mile of Hope returns to Inlet, NY on Saturday, September 14, celebrating a decade since setting the Guinness World Record for the largest canoe and kayak raft. Paddling enthusiasts are encouraged to register for the event and be part of history at https://www.onesquaremileofhope.org/.
Organizers aim to surpass the previous achievement of 3,150 vessels, setting the 2014 record. The record attempt will be followed by a celebration at Arrowhead Park featuring live music, vendors, raffles, a silent auction, and health and wellness information, along with representatives from local businesses and outfitters.
This event has become a cherished tradition, attracting participants across the Northeast and the Adirondack region. Over the years, One Square Mile of Hope has raised more than $300,000 for worthy causes, including more than $250,000 for Breast Cancer Research. This year, One Square Mile of Hope will benefit Golisano Children’s Hospitals of Syracuse and Rochester. A portion of the funds raised will also support local first responder organizations and Kiwanis of Farmington-Victor.
One Square Mile of Hope was born from a desire to honor those fighting cancer by contributing to research and care. Founder Connie Perry, owner of Frisky Otter Tours, established the event in memory of a close friend lost to breast cancer. Seeking a meaningful way to honor her while raising funds to combat the disease, Perry combined her love for the water with a bold mission – to attempt a Guinness World Record. This unique concept resonated with the local business community, leading to the creation of One Square Mile of Hope.
“The sight of thousands – 1,104, 1,902, and then a record-breaking 3,150 – of canoes, kayaks, and guide boats coming together, united by human hands for a cause, is truly awe-inspiring,” says Inlet Tourism Director Adele Burnett. “The impact of the funds raised through the events over the years is equally profound.”
One Square Mile of Hope has fostered a spirit of friendly competition with other communities like Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Suttons Bay, Michigan. These events, including One Square Mile of Hope, unite people in support of important causes, ranging from breast cancer research to local school fundraising initiatives.
Again this year, proceeds from One Square Mile of Hope will benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Rochester and Syracuse, Kiwanis International, and local first responders.

Most of the trails are purpose-built for mountain biking or ski touring but also accommodate other human-powered activities. The organization collaborates with public agencies, including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Adirondack Park Agency, not-for-profit environmental groups, towns, villages, and private landowners.
Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Releases 2023 Leisure Travel Study Results
The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) has released results of its annual leisure travel study which uncovers visitor demographics and information about travel expenditures while in the region.
This survey analyzes non-business travel to Lake Placid, Essex and Hamilton counties, along with the adjacent communities of Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake.
ROOST collaborated with PlaceMaking, a regional community and economic development research firm to develop and administer this survey. It was sent via email to a sample of the region’s 2023 leisure travelers, inviting them to complete an online survey. Results were compiled from more than 19,000 responses received; specifically from visitors who spent the majority of their time in the region.
ROOST conducts surveys throughout the year to identify visitor preferences and industry trends, inform and plan various marketing initiatives, and assess the impact of marketing initiatives over time. According to ROOST Marketing Director Michelle Clement, the studies provide valuable data - information used to implement evidence-based decisions with regard to marketing initiatives. “ROOST bases its marketing strategies and tactics on data, combined with industry trends, to optimize the impact of those efforts,” said Clement. “This survey provides important insights regarding leisure travelers’ travel patterns, interests and preferences. We analyze results of all surveys, and integrate the findings with previous surveys and studies, allowing for a more thorough understanding of consumer preferences, activity and expenditures.”
Key findings include:
Expenditure levels in 2023 continued to climb to the highest levels reported over 20 years of surveying, with average party spending at $491/day.
Total estimated trip expenditure was $1,768; slightly higher than $1,697, reported in 2022.
Visitation by travelers from within New York state rose slightly from 69% in 2022 to 70% in 2023.
Visitation from the Northeast states, excluding NY, remains consistent at 18% of respondents.
Visitation from outside the Northeast US decreased slightly to 7%, with the majority of those from the southern states.
Canadian visitation continues to rebound.
Those who visit the region continue to cite outdoor activities as a significant reason for visiting, with 65% of respondents reporting this as a draw. Of those who traveled to the region for outdoor activities, hiking remains the most popular activity (77%), followed by canoeing or kayaking (29%), fishing (17%), boating (14%), and cross-country skiing/snowshoeing (14%). Increases in reported popularity of fishing and cross-country skiing/snowshoeing in 2023 are notable.
“Relaxing, dining and shopping” remained another frequently expressed reason to visit the area by 53% of respondents. Sightseeing (40%) and visiting friends (25%) rounded out the top four areas of interest.
The 2023 survey also analyzed the impact of travelers on local lodging properties. Hotels and motels remained the most popular overall lodging choice (42%), with significant growth in reported popularity in comparison to the last several years, when it ranged between 38%-40%. Reported stays in short-term rental lodging dropped very slightly to 17% (from 18% in 2022).
According to Mary Jane Lawrence, ROOST chief operating officer, “occupancy tax revenue generated by those who choose to stay in hotels, motels and short-term rental properties throughout the region, directly benefits local communities, is used to market the region, and contributes to projects that enhance local communities for residents and visitors, helping to ensure our region’s communities thrive; a healthy community is a great place to live and a wonderful place to visit.”
While the overall survey results have been analyzed as a complete package, the results for Hamilton and Essex counties have also been compiled and evaluated, independently from one another. Overall, Hamilton County results echoed those of Essex County, with hiking and paddling as the most popular activities, the majority of visitors hailing from within New York state and from the Northeast US, along with an increase in average expenditure.
Hamilton County continues to welcome a higher percentage of campers (25%) than Essex County (12%). Reported interest in fishing grew from 10% in the prior year to 12% in 2023. In Hamilton County, reported interest in cross-country skiing/snowshoeing grew from 4% to 8%. Fourteen percent of respondents expressed an interest in birding; this has remained a strong area of interest with steady growth during the last decade.

Tupper Lake Triad Challenge Race Scheduled
The Tupper Lake Triad Challenge will take place on Saturday, September 7, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Now in its sixth year, the event is organized by the Tupper Lake Rotary Club; proceeds benefit the community through the club’s various projects and activities.
The triad challenge is a one-day, cumulatively timed race. Participants work to conquer Coney Mountain, Mount Arab and Goodman Mountain, all located in the Tupper Lake area.
According to Rotary Member and Event Organizer Sue Fitzpatrick, the three lower-elevation hikes that comprise the Triad Challenge appeal to all experience levels, including well-seasoned hikers, casual outdoor enthusiasts and families. “We’re excited to bring back the Tupper Lake Triad Challenge Race and offer an opportunity for everyone to enjoy our beautiful trails and vibrant community,” she said. “It’s a chance for adventure and fun, all while supporting Rotary’s important projects in Tupper Lake.”
Participants will tackle the mountains one after another; their round-trip hike times recorded by event officials. Those with the lowest total time will be celebrated at the post-race event taking place at P-2s Irish Pub. “Perhaps the most fun aspect of the hike is the immediate relationships that are formed among the hikers,” commented Fitzpatrick. “They often have fun conversations with each other, they encourage each other along the hiking trails, and then celebrate together at the end.”
Race Day Schedule:
8:00 a.m. – Check-in at the trailhead of Coney Mountain
9:00 a.m. – Race begins
4 p.m. – Post-race celebration at P-2's Irish Pub
