Call for nominations for the Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Award
Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Awards to be announced during Community Day Lake Placid, NY — The Lake Placid Community Day Committee invites all Lake Placid residents to celebrate the community and its rich legacy of volunteerism with a picnic and party on Sunday, May 31. In addition to the announcement of the Volunteers of the Year, the annual Community Day event is intended to promote the many volunteer opportunities available in the region to current and new residents. The picnic and party is 1 - 4 p.m. at the North Elba Show Grounds and includes free live music, food, drinks, kid’s activities, and a performance by the newly-formed High Peaks Community Band. To nominate a volunteer for the North Elba/Lake Placid Distinguished Volunteer of the Year, fill out the nomination form and return to ROOST by March 31, 2020. Forms are also available at the Lake Placid Visitors Bureau. They can be returned to Bethany Valenze by email at bvalenze@lakeplacid.com, or stop in the office at 2608 Main St., Lake Placid. Any previous candidates may be re-nominated. The committee also retains and reviews all past nominees. A Distinguished Volunteer award will be given in recognition of a lifetime of activity and effort on behalf of the town of North Elba and/or the village of Lake Placid. Volunteers do have to reside in North Elba/Lake Placid and the organization that they have been nominated for - and where they have performed their services - must be within the boundaries of North Elba. We also invite people to submit nominations for our Youth Category for volunteers 18 years of age and under. The same criteria will be used. Nomination criteria Any individual or organization may nominate one or more candidate(s).The organization and/or the volunteer work must be within the boundaries of North Elba.Previous nomination does not disqualify person for another year.Please keep nominations confidential. All nominees will not necessarily receive an award.Include as much pertinent information to support your nomination as you can.Please provide at least one contact in support of your nomination. Be sure to include name and number where support person can be reached.Additional letters of support are encouraged. Olympic Cauldron Lighting Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Forty years ago this week, the Lake Placid Olympic Flame was lit and signified the start of the historic 1980 Winter Olympic Games that brought this nation together like never before. Tonight, the stage was set and former and current Olympians, dignitaries, community members, volunteers from the 1980 Games all gathered to celebrate Lake Placid’s enduring Olympic legacy at the Lake Placid Horseshow grounds. From Friday through Sunday, February 23, this Adirondack Olympic village is rolling out the red carpet and offering a packed schedule of activities to revel in its unmatched Olympic legacy – past, present and future. Lake Placid invites you to participate in events that commemorate the Olympic hockey team’s improbable win over the Russians, known as the “Miracle on Ice,” and to celebrate its future as a winter sports destination. The entire village including the Olympic venues will be on full display during this community-wide celebration and more than 20 Olympians will participate in events available to the public. During this time, ROOST's role will be to compile as much information as possible to share with the public, but will always defer to departments of public health in regards to recommendations about closures and safe health practices. The ROOST team is busy working to keep an up-to-date list of information available for travelers, locals, business owners, and those who just love the Adirondacks. We have developed one location for Adirondack updates relating to Coronavirus (COVID-19). This page exists to share links to public health information, closings, event cancellations, or other relevant resources. We want to be sure all of our marketing partners have received the most recent update from the governor’s office stating the following: • Events with more than 50 people will be postponed or canceled • Gyms, movie theaters, and casinos will close at 8 p.m. tonight until further notice • Bars and restaurants will also close at 8 p.m. tonight, but can be open for take-out serviceWe are here to get the word out about what your business is offering during this time.
